Constructing Excellence South West shortlisted

EX2 Group has been shortlisted for Infrastructure Project of the Year at the Constructing Excellence South West Awards, for its five-year electrical infrastructure upgrade at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.
Delivered between 2020 and 2025, the £9.9m programme replaced 40-year-old HV and LV systems within a live regional acute hospital, maintaining uninterrupted power to critical clinical services throughout. The project comprised more than 400 interdependent activities and over 60 planned shutdowns, all completed with zero unplanned outages.
A collaborative delivery model underpinned the scheme, with EX2 acting as Principal Contractor and working closely with the Trust and supply chain to coordinate programme sequencing, shutdown planning and live operational constraints.
Productivity and performance were driven through a phased methodology supported by temporary infrastructure and a robust digital strategy. Point cloud surveys and BIM modelling enabled accurate coordination within constrained plant spaces, reducing rework and improving delivery certainty.
The project also delivered strong outcomes across safety, sustainability and social value. More than 45,000 hours were worked with zero reportable incidents, over 90% of waste was diverted from landfill, and local employment and apprenticeships were supported throughout the programme.
The upgraded infrastructure provides a resilient, efficient and future-ready electrical platform, supporting ongoing hospital expansion and the adoption of advanced medical technologies.
