Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital – Energy Centre

EX2 Group successfully delivered a £10 million electrical infrastructure upgrade at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Wonford), one of the South West’s leading acute NHS hospitals. Delivered over a five-year programme, the project transformed the site’s HV and LV electrical systems, significantly improving power resilience, capacity and operational reliability.

Working within a fully operational live hospital environment, EX2 replaced the existing 11kV HV transformers, installed three new 2MVA backup generators, and modernised the hospital’s LV distribution network, including high-capacity switchboards and cast resin busbar systems. Extensive enabling works were completed to maintain continuous power to critical clinical services throughout the programme.

As Principal Contractor, EX2 developed the design from RIBA Stage 4i through to Stage 5, using BIM, point cloud surveys and Autodesk Revit models to minimise risk and disruption. The project was delivered in collaboration with Hoare Lea and Ward Williams, following BSRIA Soft Landings principles.

The upgrade provides the hospital with future-proof electrical infrastructure, improved protection for critical medical equipment, and the capacity to support expanding healthcare services and new medical technologies — helping ensure reliable, uninterrupted patient care for the local community.
