Project Overview

EX2 Group supported the transformation of Armada Way, a flagship regeneration project in Plymouth city centre. Installing feature lighting, innovative solar-generating “trees” that create a distinctive new landmark, as well as hidden plantroom works and fire safety systems.

The Challenge

The project required a solution that would bring sustainability to a design of strong visual impact, while delivering reliable infrastructure in a busy public environment. Lighting and power systems needed to be both efficient and robust, enhancing the space for day and night use as well as during events.

Feature Lighting

EX2 installed a modern lighting scheme to enhance the public space, including:

  • In-ground uplighters for trees and landscaping
  • Integrated linear lighting within pathways
  • LED feature lighting within the Solar PV Trees

The system is automatically controlled to maximise energy efficiency.

Solar PV Trees

Four bespoke Solar PV Trees form the centrepiece of the scheme. These:

  • Generate renewable energy on-site, peak generation capacity of approximately 7.6kWp
  • Incorporate integrated architectural LED lighting
  • Provide a striking visual identity for the space

Supporting Infrastructure

To ensure smooth operation, EX2 delivered supporting systems including power distribution, plantroom services, and safety systems. A subterranean switchroom with automatic fire detection systems support the overall safety strategy for the facility.

Benefits

  • Supports sustainability goals through on-site renewable energy generation
  • Reduces energy consumption and operational costs with efficient lighting and automated controls
  • Future-proofs infrastructure with durable, low-maintenance systems

The Outcome

The completed project delivers a modern, welcoming public space that blends design, innovation, and sustainability.

EX2’s work has helped create a vibrant city centre environment, with the Solar PV Trees standing as a lasting symbol of forward-thinking urban regeneration.
